in houston. if you plan to travel to the high country today, be very careful. winter storm warnings run. we could see upwards of 5 feet of snow across the higher between now and monday morning. so no messing around. this is a serious storm system. computer models picking up on the storm sagging south throughout the morning, this afternoon more showery. but toward tomorrow another impulse moves in and you're looking at possibility of some embedded thunderstorms some heavy rainfall into tomorrow morning could be a wild morning around the bay area tomorrow morning, as well. temperatures today expected only to be in the 50s outside and the next couple of days wet on and off throughout the weekend very stormy. maybe a break on monday into the first part of tuesday, christmas day but a chance of showers by the afternoon. and more rain is expected on wednesday and thursday. that's a look at weather. let's check traffic with gianna. >> rain on christmas, lawrence. >> i know, that would be terrible. i hope not. >> that was not on my christmas list. >>> 15 minutes delays to report out of redwood city

: near houston, texas the tornado destroyed some buildings and tore down power lines. francis couldn't get away in time. >> we tried to get away. the truck was off the ground and it wouldn't go. finally we took off. >> reporter: damage from pearl river, mississippi, stretched a mile wide. 8 people were taken to the hospital. ted williams' family was home celebrating christmas when the twister hit. >> they hunkered down in the laundry room. >> reporter: further north a snowstorm is the problem. snow and ice covered the roads in oklahoma. >> i got my chains on. i'm probably the only one with chains on driving around going 5 miles an hour. >> reporter: and the storm is pick up steam as it heads through arkansas into the midwest. within those warning areas, blizzard conditions are expected over the next 24 hours or so. tomorrow there could be up to a foot of snow in many parts of new england. edward lawrence for cbs news, washington. >> and back here in california, there was snow in the sierra for christmas. that meant chains for drivers without four-wheel drive and big delays. some folk

that should give way to sunshine. around the country mostly cloudy skies in houston and cloudy into denver 53 degrees. a cool 47 in chicago and 45 degrees but mostly sunny in new york. low clouds and thick fog early on today that should begin to break up throughout the day and by the afternoon a little bit of sunshine sneaking through. temperatures going to stay fairly mild in most spots but we'll see a return probably of some low clouds an thick tule fog in the valleys tonight and tomorrow morning. temperatures in the 50s and 60s in the south bay. 50s into antioch. probably low 60s into livermore and also walnut creek. and inside the bay sunshine this afternoon and a couple of passing clouds. and temperatures in the 50s and 60s. next couple of days, we are going to see some decent weather. it should stay dry. warmer as we head in towards sunday and monday. we'll stay dry to the middle of next week. back to you. >> thank you. a phone call between president obama and house speaker john boehner may be a positive sign in all of this "fiscal cliff" drama, they spoke yesterday raising hopes that f

. seeing some rain showers in houston and chicago. chilly in denver, with a high of 33 degrees. cooler temperatures by tuesday, especially in the north bay and along the coast. wednesday, wednesday morning and for at least to about midday, we are going to see rain showers. thursday we're going to stay dry and things remain unsettled next weekend. that's a check of your 7-day forecast. let's go to gianna franco. >>> we're going live to the bay bridge toll plaza. traffic is slow and go. metering lights on. stall near treasure island. you're backed up to 880 at this point. slow coming toward the bay bridge as well off the east shore freeway, 580, 24, north 880 starting to see delays. headed toward pleasanton, lots of brakes lights. traffic is starting to slow down. speeds under 25 miles per hour. about a 32 minute from the altama pass. slow and go as well. northbound 285 at guadalupe parkway. as a result traffic is backed up through the area. we're seeing delays on the southbound side of 280. and westbound 237 connector you can see e getting slow and go as well between 880 and 101. that's

change. temperatures there into the 50s. across the country, not too bad. 73 degrees in houston. 48 degrees and chilly in denver. 45 in chicago. mostly cloudy skies. rain possible delays in new york today. temperatures around the bay area mainly in the 50s and 60s for highs. so kind of a cool brisk breezy day outside. but temperatures really starting to drop off over the next couple of days. in fact, look at the temperatures for tuesday and wednesday. the highs maxing out only in the low to about the mid-40s. overnight lows likely to drop off into the 30s. maybe even some 20s in some of the wind sheltered valleys and then back to rain as we get into thursday, friday, and more stormy weather over the weekend. that's exciting, huh, gianna? >> that is a lot of weather movement happening and unfortunately makes for a very exciting commute. we have a lot going on, on the roadways. live look at the bay bridge toll plaza, metering lights on, traffic slow up the incline. give yourself some extra time. now we have a couple of accidents. i just got word of one from chp. i couldn't make a map
